McLaren 765 LT Cuts the Weight, Brings More Speed
March 4th, 2020
Out of all of the supercars out there, the McLaren 720S is one of the absolute best. So how do you take a car that good and make it even better? You let McLaren’s engineers turn it into a lightweight “Longtail” edition. Ladies and gentlemen, I present the McLaren 765 LT.
The badass 765 LT weighs in at just 2709 pounds dry – 176 pounds less than the 720S. Its twin-turbo V8 engine has been tuned to make 755 bhp and 590 lb-ft. of torque, which gives it an incredible power-to-weight ratio, and drops its 0-to-62 mph time down to just 2.7 seconds. It’ll get to 124 mph in a blistering fast 7.2 seconds too. McLaren says they also re-tuned the transmission’s gearing to further improve acceleration.
Weight reductions and aerodynamic improvements come in the form of a new carbon fiber front splitter, front bumper, front floor, side skirts, rear bumper, rear diffuser and larger active rear wing. It’s got a lightweight titanium quad exhaust as well. The car also has special springs and dampers, a lowered front ride height, wider front track width, and rides on lightweight alloy wheels wrapped in incredibly sticky Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R racing tires.
The air conditioning and the sound system have been stripped to further reduce weight, and the interior has lightweight carbon fiber racing seats, a carbon fiber center tunnel, and an exposed carbon fiber floor.
McLaren says it will make just 765 of the 765 LT, and if you need to ask the price, you definitely can’t afford one. That said, I’ve heard that it will sell for somewhere just south of $400,000.
